Direct mail analytics for people who want to know what the mail actually did

Iwantrackcards covers how to measure direct mail and print marketing: response tracking, call tracking, QR codes, attribution and the real cost of each lead. We keep responses, leads and customers in separate columns, because a busy phone isn't the same thing as a profitable campaign.

Where data meets direct mail. Measure what matters.

Six rungs, and we never skip one

  1. 01DeliveredPieces that reached a mailbox. A cost, not a result.
  2. 02RespondedA call, scan, visit or code mention. Something happened.
  3. 03LeadA response from someone who could plausibly buy.
  4. 04QualifiedA lead you can serve and want to serve.
  5. 05ConvertedSigned, booked or bought.
  6. 06RevenueWhat converted customers paid, set against what the campaign cost.

Bar widths show the order of the funnel. They are not data.

CM 01 Campaign Measurement

Campaign Measurement

Campaign measurement starts before the mail drops, when you decide which number will settle the argument. We write about goals, funnels, holdout groups and measurement windows, so a campaign gets judged on what it produced.

PM 02 Print Marketing

Print Marketing

The printed piece decides what can be measured. A tracking number buried in the footer, or a QR code too small to scan from a kitchen counter, costs you data before anyone responds.

Cost per qualified lead by format. A cheaper postcard that brings in worse leads isn't cheaper.

RT 03 Response Tracking

Response Tracking

A response is any action someone takes because of the mail. We cover how to catch each one, label it, and follow it until it becomes a customer or doesn't.

MA 04 Marketing Attribution

Marketing Attribution

Mail can't be clicked, so it rarely gets credit by default. Holdouts, matchbacks and zip-code comparisons give it a fairer hearing, within limits we'll always state.

QR 05 QR Codes

QR Codes

A scan is one of the cleanest signals print has, and one of the most overrated. It's a visit with a timestamp. What happens on the landing page is the part that counts.

Scan-to-form rate. Raw scan counts flatter every campaign.

CT 06 Call Tracking

Call Tracking

For law firms, medical practices and home services, mail responses still arrive by phone. A dedicated number shows the mail made the phone ring. Whether the call was a lead is the next question.

First-time callers who stayed on long enough to be real conversations, not total rings.

Two questions we get first

What should I know before getting into direct mail analytics?

Decide what counts as a result before the mail drops. A scan, a call and a paying customer are different events, and each needs its own way of being recorded. Plan the tracking paths, such as a dedicated number, a campaign URL and a source field in your CRM, at the same time as the design. Expect some responses to arrive through channels you can't tag, which is why a held-back group that gets no mail is worth the trouble.

How much does direct mail analytics cost in United States, South Carolina, Myrtle Beach, Conway, Grand Strand, Southeast United States, major U.S. local-business markets, national direct-mail and print-marketing audiences?

There isn't one honest price, here or anywhere else, so we won't publish a made-up one. Cost depends on what you stack together: call-tracking services are usually billed by the number and by usage, QR and URL tracking can run on free analytics tools, and CRM work depends on what you already pay for. Get itemized quotes and add the tracking line to the campaign cost, so your cost per lead includes it. For local businesses on the Grand Strand and elsewhere, the cost people forget is staff time spent keeping source fields clean.
