Call tracking for direct mail: sorting the real leads from the rings

For a lot of local businesses, the phone is still where mail responses show up. Law firms, HVAC companies, medical practices and home-service contractors get calls, not clicks. Call tracking gives each mailing its own phone number so those calls can be counted and tied to a campaign.

Counting is only the start. This section looks at what comes after: duration filters, first-time versus repeat callers, missed calls during business hours, recordings and the consent rules that come with them, and how call data reaches a CRM so a booked appointment can be traced back to a specific card.

We also cover the failure modes. Numbers that get reused across campaigns. Tracking lines that ring through to an overworked front desk. Reports that call every ring a lead.

A dedicated number tells you the mail made the phone ring. Whether it made money is a separate question, and it's the one we care about.
